1. What's your role within grid computing?
The question is : what is not my role… I’ve done design, development, operation, support, teaching, getting funding, lobbying, standardization, ….
2. Why did you get in to grid?
It seemed like a good idea at the time… seriously, the problems grids address are still mostly there and wide open. Complex and interesting.
3. What did you study at university?
PhD in Theoretical Physics – Lattice QCD.
4. What did you want to be at school?
I never knew what to answer to this question. So I usually just said something to shut the grownups up, like astronaut (not true, I hate confined spaces) or train driver (not true, too boring)...
5. What are the highlights of your job?
Getting things to work, finishing projects successfully.
6. What are the lowlights of your job?
When the same mistake is repeated for the 20th time by people who should know better...
7. What do you do when you’re not at work?
Being with my family.
8. What are your goals for the next year?
Successful establishment of the Swiss National Grid Association as the national grid initiative, sensitizing the Swiss users, establishing channels for long-term funding of grids in Switzerland.
9. Would you encourage your children to get in to grid and IT?
Well, I hope that by the time they grow up, it will be just another tool to be used through the web. The ultimate success for the grid is if it becomes invisible, just like the electric power grid! To get into IT, I would recommend it as an option, it pays the bills...
10. What do you want to be when you grow up?
I could never answer this question. I guess I never will (nor grow up)..
In general, it is much more important being among fun people and having a good time, then you are enjoying whatever you do…
