About us

The GridCafé explains grid computing in a simple and stimulating fashion.

It does not attempt to provide an exhaustive review of grid technology. Nor can it claim a completely unbiased point of view - it was originally developed at CERN, the world's largest high-energy physics laboratory and a leader in grid development.

Nevertheless, it is the ambition of GridCafé to provide a broad and balanced introduction to grid technology. The goal is to inform, rather than to proselytise, and so critical viewpoints are included alongside optimistic scenarios.

For GridCafé to continue to improve, we need your help, advice, feedback and encouragement: please do not hesitate to contact us.

Grid computing in 30 seconds

I’m Max, and I know you don’t have hours to spend reading about grid computing. I can give you the basics, and the big picture, in no more than 30 seconds. Give me a try!

Five big ideas about grid computing

My name is Sophia. If you’re interested in what makes grid computing different from other types of computing, I can help you out. Visit me to learn about the five big ideas that are driving the development of grids.

 Building a grid

I’m Sorsu, a software engineer. I can take you backstage to see just what you need to build a computing grid. I can also explain what it means to “gridify” your science application. Come take a look.

   Grids in IT history

I’m RoboGeek, the waiter. I think grids are the greatest thing since the transistor, and love to talk about terabytes and petaflops. I can give you a quick history of IT and how grids fit in to the changing face of computing. Would you like a latte while we chat?

  Grids and you

My name is Vijay. I’m interested in how grid technology is impacting science and our society. Could grids represent a paradigm shift in computing? Who’s using grids and for what? Will grids affect our daily lives? Come say ‘Hi’ and I’ll show you around.

 grid computing in debate

I’m Anton, and I’m fascinated by the possibilities that grids are opening up, but I know we still have a long way to go before grid technologies are perfect. I can let you in on some of the biggest questions still facing grid development. We’ll take a look at grid standards, gender issues, cloud computing and more. Right this way...

   grid powered projects

I’m Dana. Why not join me on a whirlwind tour of dozens of different projects that use grid computing? Whether its new medicines, disaster control, finding E.T, or doing better business, grid computing is introducing new possibilities. Let’s have a look around.

 People behind the projects

My name is Aika, and I’m a computer scientist working on grid computing. If you’d like to learn more about who I work with, their different jobs, and the highlights (and lowlights) of their careers in grid computing, you’re talking to the right person.
